The Practical Reiki Companion is HERE!

In response to student request, I’ve created a workbook for Practical Reiki students and teachers. It’s called The Practical Reiki Companion, and it’s now available!

I started out writing this workbook to offer students a way to log and keep track of their practices and healing experiences. But, as things often do, it became so much more. For each chapter, there are reminders and reflective prompts for journaling about your experiences. I added light lines and vibrant images so the workbook is a beautiful keepsake journal, not just an academic tool. (Have a look inside here!)

Also, I realized that the process of writing down reflections creates an important change for the student. If you know that after you complete this healing session, you will be writing down what you experience, think and feel, you will be in the mindset of paying attention during the session. The “assignment” cues your left brain to stay focused and present, which in turn increases your ability to tune into the right brain’s feed of intuitive sensations. It’s amazingly powerful as a tool for mindfulness and strengthening your intuition. This process will accelerate your ability to feel the strength of the Reiki energy. My goal is to empower every student with confidence in his or her ability to work with Reiki. This workbook is designed to do exactly that!

It’s also an excellent tool for the student who completes Practical Reiki training and wants to teach others. Having the logs of your attunement experiences and healing practices will enable you as a teacher to reflect and share some of the unique and powerful experiences you had while learning, thus enriching the learning for your students. And I’ve also included several attunement logs for the teacher, so it’s easy to keep track of how passing on attunements went on the teacher and student end. This workbook is designed to take you from beginning the journey to helping others to do the same.

I’m proud and excited about the Practical Reiki Companion! Those who have had an advance peek, and the first student who is currently using it and giving me feedback all share this excitement.

If you’ve already learned Practical Reiki, I encourage you to get one to transfer your notes from your learning into this keepsake.

If you’re beginning to learn Practical Reiki, you need this. It will help you, empower you, deepen your learning and accelerate your growth.

If you’re teaching Practical Reiki, this is for you and for your students. You will be a stronger teacher and your students will be successful because this tool will be part of their journey.

Thank you to the students who encouraged me to create The Practical Reiki Companion and waited with excitement. It’s here!

Tax Relief for Us All

Well, here’s an unpleasant surprise. Today, in the mail, came a letter from the IRS. I had many jobs in 2009 – teaching, freelance writing, game content writing, Reiki classes, and even worked for Google for a while. Apparently, on last year’s tax return, one of my W2 had not made it into my 2009 tax return. In fact, I had never even received it and it was overlooked. But not, apparently, by someone at the IRS. We’re being charged a rather alarming sum of back taxes based on unclaimed earnings. Blah.

So I’m deciding to make a win-win situation out of this instead of lamenting it.

My Energy Healing Certification Program, a nine month comprehensive program in advanced studies of energy healing, usually has a $1,500 tuition fee. To give you prospective students a break, and to encourage the possibility of making the program possible for more of you, I’m offering the program (which starts this Sunday, January 9 or Thursday, January 13 – two different tracks will be running concurrently to meet demand), at a discounted rate of 3 payments of $330, or one payment of $940.

You and I will have more money left to deal with our taxes, and more of us can enrich our lives with learning and growing intuitive abilities.

I like looking at a troubling situation as a win-win instead.

So the only catch is that the program is starting so soon. I have to give a deadline for registration. The good news is that the class is recorded, so if you miss the first one because you need a week to get your own finances organized, you can watch the introductory lesson after the fact.

Therefore, you may register no later than Saturday, January 15, to receive the discount for the Sunday or Thursday program.

All of the dates and topics for the Energy Healing Certification Program can be found here. Check it out. This is a life-changing opportunity.

And there’s another win involved. This training, from the second week forward, gives you skills that you can apply toward helping others. That also includes guidance and support from me on growing a practice for yourself that can bring in some money in exchange for your services. As your skills increase, so will the number of opportunities that come your way.

I guess that makes this win-win-win. Take that, IRS!

P.S. Here are some FAQs about the Energy Healing Certification Program:

  • Q: Can I really learn Reiki this way? Doesn’t this training need to be done in person?
  • A: Reiki energy is not limited by distance. Attunements are fully effective either way, and will be experienced same as in person by each student. Everyone who receives training this way is completely capable of connecting to the Reiki energy immediately following the first attunement.

  • Q: I’m skeptical. Will Reiki work for me? Will I feel it? Don’t I have to believe in it for it to work?
  • A: Skeptics are welcome. All you need is a basic curiosity – enough to say, “I don’t know if this will work, but I’ll give it a try and see.” I encourage everyone to let experience be his or her teacher. I’m here to allow and facilitate you being able to experience this for yourself.

  • Q: I’m afraid to pay for something if I don’t know if it will work or not. Is there some way to try Reiki before I commit to the program?
  • A: I offer free 15 minute phone consultations. Email me for a time, or call and I’ll talk to you right then or call you back shortly. My number is 216-469-2499. I’ll give you Reiki while we’re on the phone and you can try it for yourself. I’ll also answer all your questions. Talk to me. I’m here to help.

  • Q: How is this program taught?
  • A: We meet live, online, via, using a link I will send you for our online virtual classroom. You’ll need a webcam, internet access, and earphones.

  • Q: I already know Reiki. Is this program for beginners?
  • A: Whatever level of Reiki you have, or other energy healing experience, this program will take you farther, deeper, and enrich your skills in a multitude of ways. I’m here to work with each individual to help you meet your goals – from where you are to where you’d like to be.

Needles and Energy

Yesterday I had acupuncture for the first time. It happened that I met an acupuncturist, Jared West, at Insight Learning and Wellness Center last summer where we were both working at Camp Insight, a holistic day camp. I was teaching Reiki and songwriting, and Jared was doing challenge games with the campers. This summer, he suggested to me that we do a trade. He would give me an acupuncture treatment, and I would give him a Reiki healing. I agreed. I’ve always been a little curious about acupuncture, and I’m not afraid of needles at all.

I’ve also been rather stressed over waiting for registration for many classes I’ve scheduled that are coming up at the start of next week. Enrollment is a little lower than I was anticipating, and my promotional efforts have been huge. So I thought the timing was perfect for a little healing and releasing stress, and this was a great opportunity to try something new.

So I talked for a bit with Jared about my feelings and what’s been going on in my life. He was interested and caring. Then I lay on the table and he placed needles in my ears, head, forehead, arms, stomach, and feet. It did not hurt. He put on nice music and told me to just relax, meditate, rest, whatever I wanted to do and he would check on me in five minutes. I decided it would be great to just meditate a bit and take advantage of quiet time. I closed my eyes. I felt mildly tingly as I noticed energy flowing. I asked my guides what I could do about the enrollment for my upcoming certification program. I felt that I was receiving a response. It sounded like a conversational reply to my question. The response said that I have done all I needed to do, and I should just relax, take this time to care for myself so I can be the best teacher in my ability, and let the students who should be learning with me come. It’s advice I would have given to another person had he asked me the same question, but for some reason, hearing it told to me was very reassuring. I felt myself relax.

Jared came in and asked me how I was doing and I smiled at him and said just fine. He adjusted a few needles and left the room again. I tuned in again, grateful for the chance to quiet my mind. I asked what I could do to attract students more. The answer came again, sounding like I was having a conversation with someone who was always there but who I had not really noticed before. The answer was to shine my light, from the heart. I asked how to do this so it would be noticed. The answer was “intention, silly.” I liked the “silly” addition, because “intention” is a word I am always using when I’m talking about Reiki to my students.

I also asked what I should do to improve my own intuitive growth. Chided again, I was answered that this meditation was an example of something I should do daily. That the intuition is there for me if I could just get quiet enough to notice. It was good advice, and resonated familiarly because I had just told my students at the Increasing Intuition workshop I taught on Monday night that meditation is the most important means to strengthening one’s intuition. More advice I should heed, of course.

Jared came back into the room and asked me how I was doing. He began to remove the needles. I was really relaxed and happy, and felt lots of energy flowing, the stress really gone. As I was telling him that, I noticed a bright, lime green aura appear around his head. I smiled really big and told him what I saw. He laughed, and I laughed too. He said our energy was probably reflecting off each other. It was a nice idea. He left the room again. I kept laughing. Then I started to cry. I think I just needed to release all of the clenched up tension I had been holding for quite some time over all of this.

My acupuncture experience was really great. I felt wonderful for the rest of the day. I was also glad to have been able to share Reiki with Jared, who really enjoyed it as well. We agreed to do another exchange in two weeks, something I’m looking forward to already.

Energy flows in many ways. It’s been great to experience some of the same benefits of a Reiki session in a different modality. I look forward to future opportunities with acupuncture and also whatever other chances I’ll be offered to experience different energy healing modalities.

Building a local Reiki practice is hard work. It starts slowly. I’ve been expecting lots of return for lots of effort. It is coming about, but slowly. Word will spread and more students will find me. The ironic thing is that I was just called on the phone and asked if I could teach Kundalini Reiki for an associate and her client who wants to learn it. I said yes and we planned for Sunday to be the start. Then she said there was another client interested and gave me her number. I called, and that person was added. By the end of the day, I had 5 students enrolled for a class I had not scheduled or put any effort into promoting. I was left shaking my head at the humor in the Universe.

An addendum: Last night I taught an hour long Intro to Reiki class online via webcam. The replay is available for $10 and it’s really packed with information. It’s in .exe format and so it has some interactive components too. If you’d like to download it and view it for yourself, this paypal link will take you to the download page once you put the $10 through:

Also, I’ve opened a new section of the online Energy Healing Certification Program, starting in October. You can read more about it and enroll here:

Disturbing Divisions

I have a student who has been learning with me for close to a year. She started with no previous knowledge of Reiki, and learned Kundalini Reiki with me, followed by working on her intuitive development in many areas through Intuitive Development Coaching. She’s shared her successes as she became more aware of the sensations of energy, her guidance, angels, and confidence in her abilities to work with Reiki. It’s been beautiful to be a part of and witness to the many ways in which she has discovered these abilities and connections. It’s changed her life for the better and helped her see her path more clearly. She has been learning with me via distance. We’ve never met in person, although we have spoken on the phone a couple of times. Last week, she told me this story:

Recently, she decided to attend a Reiki circle in her local area. Gathered with other Reiki practitioners, they were all getting ready to start the flow of the energy. She watched them draw symbols in the air and on themselves. She sat quietly, intending that the energy begin. Kundalini Reiki does not use symbols. She felt the other practitioners looking at her sideways. She overheard one say to the other, “Where did she get her training?” The other responded “Oh, she phoned it in over the internet.” How snarky. My student left shortly thereafter.

I’m unhappy about the attitude of some Reiki practitioners about distance learning. Let’s face it – Reiki energy is not limited by distance any more than love is. Learning Reiki is like learning any subject – the depth and ease of your learning is partially your effort, and partially your teacher’s ability to teach you well. I teach locally and I teach by distance. In each case, I give my students close individual support and guidance. I am invested in his or her learning. I care about my student’s experiences learning and working with the Reiki energy. My local students do not receive more because they are with me in person. I take my role as teacher seriously, and my students’ success, confidence with their Reiki practice, and genuine love for energy work are testament to both the effectiveness of their practice and confidence in my teaching methods. I’m truly proud of my work and stand behind it.

So when one of my distance students is treated with disrespect by others who practice Reiki, I am disturbed. This is not what BEing Reiki is about. My student is comfortable and confident with the way she practices Reiki. Her energy is strong. I doubt that anyone experiencing Reiki from her would be able to tell the difference between Reiki from her and Reiki from one who learned in a local class, (provided the one who learned locally had a good teacher).

I think that the politics of those who would judge distance learning against local, or Usui Reiki against other methods, is unnecessary and negative. How about we all focus on our common goals – offering healing energy to those who need it, balancing ourselves, and trying to make the world a better place through our work? Seriously, there is enough to deal with from those who don’t understand or accept that Reiki helps. We don’t need to be passing judgment on each other within our Reiki circle.

Winter Introspection

We’re nearly in the middle of January already. Here where I live in University Heights, Ohio, the world is blanketed in a heavy layer of snow. It’s gray and cold outside. People I speak with talk of already being tired of winter. I can relate. It’s not my season. But it takes up a good quarter of the year here every year, so it’s not different. The anticipation of spring has set in already. It’ll be a while before it gets here though.

Two of my local Reiki classes have been postponed due to low enrollment. I understand that this is common at the start of January. People don’t want to venture out, holiday bills are piled up, and the long holiday season has taken some a while to get reorganized after it ended, so registration details were missed. The Reiki for Parents and Distance Healing classes at CHEMAM have been subsequently moved to February, new dates TBA. I was sort of bummed over the need to postpone, but I am going to take this time to focus on continuing my online work and I am teaching a local Kundalini Reiki class to some wonderful people at Insight Wellness.

The second weekly issue of Reiki Talk will go out today. And I will also be working on my personal growth – via meditation and taking time for Reiki self healing to be the most effective teacher and Reiki channel that I can. Winter quiet is a good time for tuning in, and maybe this is the message I need to receive – focus inward now for a while.

I did raise some fees at the start of the year, and a couple of people have commented about that. I want to put out there that money will never be an issue if someone needs Reiki or really wants to learn but needs financial arrangements. I am willing to scholarship, make payment plans, whatever someone needs in order to learn or receive Reiki healing or training. So if you want to receive or learn Reiki, but are stopped by money issues, email me. I’ll work with you. I want to share Reiki with everyone who’s ready to tap into their inner energetic power. It’s there for you, and so am I.

I had an insightful conversation yesterday with Amy Oscar, a truly amazing woman who has a wonderful blog and writes about angels. She encouraged me to ask the angels for signs that are obvious, and then watch to see what happens. I think lots of people are afraid to ask for signs, worried that it won’t work, or that they won’t get anywhere. Or maybe some are afraid that they will, and it will change their lives more than they are ready for. All I know is that when we were tweeting with each other, my head had that “being gripped” sensation that happens when I feel my guides are trying to get my attention. So I’m passing the message along here, as much as I’m taking it to heart for my own practice. I’m going to ask more often for signs and guidance from the angels who are there, waiting for the opportunity to help. Join me! Let me know how things go for you too. I’ll be posting.

Wishing everyone an introspective, aware and enriching January.

Teaching in Person

I’ve been teaching local Reiki classes for the first time this month, and tonight my Kundalini Reiki class of eight wonderful students will receive their final attunement. I’m also teaching Reiki for Parents, and it’s going very well.

I was nervous at the start, because all of my Reiki teaching, with the exception of one-on-one classes, has been remotely via my website. There have been over 200 students in the past year and a half, and that’s a lot! I am confident and absolutely adore teaching Reiki. But facing a class full of people in a room was somehow a little daunting to me. It’s funny too, because I’m a teacher, and have been teaching kids and teens various subjects for over 13 years. But a room full of adults? That felt different!

I took a leap. I trusted that all would be well, and that my teaching ability and passion for Reiki would support me in helping everyone understand and feel the energy. I had to decide how I would attune everyone, since I knew I could do it all at once by simple intention. Instead, I decided I would pass along the attunements individually to everyone in class (I touched each person on the shoulders, intending for him or her to be attuned as he or she intended to accept the attunement). Then I moved to the next person, and at the end, I sat at the table and felt the energy flowing between my hands as it continued working. After about 20 minutes, everyone opened up their eyes, having felt the attunement energy reach completion. Kundalini Reiki attunements don’t have the ritualized aspects of Usui Reiki attunements, so no more is needed than simple intention for passing the attunements along. Once everyone had opened their eyes, each person spoke of his or her experience, and each person’s was unique and yet powerful. I can’t express how grateful I am for the ability to help open people to Reiki energy and that it works every time.

Everyone returned the next week with stories about helping other people with Reiki, or their pets, and one person even saw his plant improve after he gave it Reiki! Some of them had sent distance healing, and it was felt and the recipient felt better. It was really exciting to see how they had all started realizing the benefits of Reiki, and experienced the results for themselves.

Some of my students have been in touch with me via email in between classes, with questions, or to share their excitement about the power of Reiki. I love hearing from them.

So this has been a wonderful experience for me as well, and a learning experience too. I learned that I am capable of facing a class full of students, and giving the information about Reiki clearly, as well as passing on attunements in person. I learned that I can share my passion for teaching Reiki in person as well as via email, and it’s equally well received. I shed my anxiety over teaching adults, and feel much more confident now.

I look forward to more opportunities to teach local Reiki classes and more distance students as well. I truly believe that everyone should learn Reiki because there are so many benefits and we all have this power inside us to tap into for our own healing and wellness. I am blessed and so very grateful for the opportunity to work with each person that gives me the chance.

Protecting Your Energy

I learned something, (applause, please!) and when I learn something, the first thing I want to do is to share it. (It is the teacher in me that drives me!) I am hoping that this lesson is something that will help someone avoid what happened to me.

I’m relatively new to energy work, even though it’s a part of each and every day for me. I do lots of attunements, advising and teaching. I blog about it, and think about it often, pondering how I can get the message about the amazing power we all have inside us out to more people.

My day to day life and Reiki practice both involve more giving than receiving. I know this, and it’s something I know I need to pay more mindful attention to in order to restore the balance.

Before giving a healing or attunement, I first ask my Guides and Angels for protection and support. I feel the energy and their presences around me before I begin, and it feels good, grounding, and helps me feel ready. After the session, I thank them. I also do my best to keep my mindful attention on the flow of the energy rather than let my mind wander. Being in the moment is part of my practice, and it still takes a little effort, but it’s becoming more natural. This feels right to me, and has been a good practice.

I recently learned about grounding, and posted about its importance and benefits. Today I’m going to talk about protecting your energy.

I never knew about the importance of doing this all the time, but apparently for energy workers and anyone who raises their energy to a higher vibration (through meditation for example), it is an essential practice. Having energy that is big and flowing outward apparently has the ability to attract entities and manifestations. Interacting with others for attunements and healings can make one similarly vulnerable. What are entities and manifestations? Basically, as I understand it, they are energy thought forms which take on a life of their own, and attach themselves to one’s energy, causing blockages or damage. Some can be malevolent, as I found out first hand early this morning.

Here’s what happened.

I was asleep. It was 5:45 am. I awoke suddenly, feeling as if a heavy energy was weighing on my head and chest, smothering me. I could breathe, but this felt wrong. I didn’t know why it was happening and I asked for angelic support from Archangel Michael, to help get this energy off me. I felt it continue, weighing heavily, for 15 minutes. Suddenly, it released. I looked at my watch. It was 6 am. I lay in bed, wondering what had happened, and suddenly at 6:15, it started again. The sensation was more powerful this time, feeling like a big pillow being pushed on my face and chest. I tossed in bed, but it continued. I asked again for Archangel Michael and my angels to please fight it off, and I felt a struggle going on. In 15 minutes, it was over again, and I was shaken, but felt released. I realized I have been the victim of a psychic attack.

When I got up, I told my friend and amazing healer, Sophie Lhoste, what had happened. She checked into my energy, verified that I had been attacked, and said that it was related to the attunements I did at the summer camp last week. Something that had felt displaced had come after me. She reiterated the importance of protecting my energy all the time, and said I need to learn to do that. As an energy worker, I am vulnerable to outside energies and must be mindful of cleansing my energy and protecting it.

So how does one protect oneself? There are a number of ways:

  • cleanse the room. Here is a great guide for ways to do this, from my friend Alana’s website.
  • ask for help. Ask for the angels to protect your energy, placing a shield around you. You can also ask them to guard your home, bedroom, wherever, before going to sleep at night, or whenever you feel vulnerable.
  • cleanse your energy. Do daily self healings such as Etheric Cord Flush, and ground your energy many times a day.
  • visualization techniques. You can imagine yourself protected in a bubble of white light, golden light, or a blue cloak of protection. I am going to use this at the beginning of each day and before bed.
  • crystals & stones. I carry energy charged stones with me during the day, and I am going to charge some with the intention for “protection” and add them to my collection. Tiger’s Eye is a stone that is known to be good for this, as is quartz.

Stay tuned, also. Because Sophie is going to host a 50 minute teleclass on Psychic Protection, and she’s sure to give more very important methods of how we can all protect our energies from negative influences. The class is going to be on Thursday, August 27, at 9 pm Eastern Standard Time. The fee for the call is $25 and I’ll be there too, learning these important techniques with you. Sophie is an amazing teacher, healer and resource, so I hope you’ll take this opportunity to join us on the call. Click the button to sign-up.

I urge you to try these methods and start today to make them a part of your daily practice. If you work with energy, or you’re around people with negative energy, protecting yourself can keep you from absorbing negativity that can affect you. So learn from my mistakes, and know that I am sharing this with you to help protect you as well. We’re all in this together! Energy connects us all.

Let me know how it goes for you, and I hope you’ll join us on the call.

Peace and light.

Alice’s Awakening

People often ask me how I got here, how I became a passionate Reiki teacher. Here’s the story, and links to a number of posts written at the time of the events I’ve described here. Please enjoy.

When I was a kid, I wanted to feel special. Doesn’t everyone want to feel special, endowed with something that stands out, a reason for being here? I used to read lots of books about characters with psychic powers or special abilities, and wish I was like that. But, I wasn’t.

I grew up with a liberal Jewish upbringing. I attended Hebrew School, became Bat Mitzvah and continued attending religious school through High School. I remember wishing for some feeling that what I was doing had a purpose. I wanted to feel a connection with God or at least something outside myself during services, prayers, or any time at all. I never did.

I didn’t dislike being Jewish. I felt, and still feel, connected with a People, culture, history, land, language, religion and traditions. I even went on after college to study Judaism further and received a Master’s degree in Jewish Studies. But through all of this study and search, something remained elusive: a spiritual connection. I wanted something I could feel and be sure about. I was fascinated by, skeptical of, and a little envious of those who had “spiritual confidence” – utter faith and belief. For me, experience was the only way I was going to get to that point. The experience wasn’t there for me.

I felt the most frustration during formal worship services. There are group and individual prayers, standing, sitting, singing and reading in Hebrew. I knew them all, but nothing gave me the feeling I craved. I was seeking a certainty of something more, something beyond this existence. I would leave services feeling frustrated. I wondered why I had come, what others were getting out of the experience. I think I drove my husband kinda nuts with asking him what he got out of the experience. His answers didn’t help me. He wasn’t struggling the same way as I was.

When I was pregnant with my youngest child, a parent at my kids’ school asked me if I’d like to learn Reiki. I had no idea what that was. She explained that Reiki is an energy healing technique that could be helpful for reducing pregnancy discomforts. She had my attention, and I figured, “Why not?” I came to her house, where she taught me Usui Reiki level 1, and gave me my first attunement.

I was underwhelmed, but faithfully did my Reiki self healings throughout my pregnancy, and sometimes gave my infant daughter Reiki after she was born. When she was a year and a half old, I asked that same parent if there was more to Reiki than what I had learned. She said absolutely and asked if I would like to learn level 2. I agreed.

My level 2 Reiki attunement changed everything. As soon as my teacher attuned me to level 2, my hands began to tingle. When I deliberately thought “Reiki,” my hands tingled and warmed in response. When I put them on or above myself or someone else, the resulting sense of relaxation, warmth and peace were undeniable. My teacher taught me distance healing as well. Here was the defining moment of my spiritual awakening.

This was what I had been searching for as long as I could remember: a tangible response to spiritual energy. Learning Reiki created my spiritual connection. I began offering distance healing weekly to two friends, and their physical and emotional health improvements were amazing. One of my friends had a deep fear of medical procedures, and a health issue that was terrifying her. The Reiki healings helped her release this over time, and she became calmer. It turned out she didn’t need the procedure she was expecting, as the issue had healed. The other friend was having physical therapy, and over the course of time, she experienced great improvements and didn’t need to continue the therapy. I was amazed, delighted, and felt completely inspired. My friends were too, and both of them went on to learn Reiki for themselves.

This was more than a physical-spiritual connection now, this was the magic power I desired in my youth; a purpose for my existence. I had been transformed from a mere mortal to someone with healing power. Three months later, I became a Reiki Master Teacher.

I knew that if I could learn to do this, anyone could. It became my mission to teach others what’s right inside us all. I find great joy, satisfaction and validation in seeing others find their spiritual connection as I did, and knowing that they go on to pass this knowledge to others.

Every day, I receive emails from my students telling me how amazed they are at the way Reiki has improved their lives. Many of them go on to teach others, join the Distance Healing Network, and share this amazing energy with their family, friends, and those who need it. This keeps me going, reminds me daily of the power and reality of this connection to energy, and the immense power that everyone has within if they care to find it. It has become my purpose to help people discover this, and I’ve never felt so fulfilled, motivated, and grateful.

Love and gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey so far, and all who will join me yet.

The Rosy Glasses

Had an interesting lesson on perspective this week from my friend David. He started the conversation by congratulating me on my husband’s job situation. My first thought was that he’d missed the memo – didn’t realize that my husband is looking for work after being laid off recently from his job at MetroHealth. So I fired off a reply saying, “He is laid off, David.” His response surprised me.
“I know… I always tell people congratulations for being laid off. Because I 10000% believe that can only lead to some amazing opportunities. It sucks while it’s happening, but everything in my life that has sucked has produced amazing growth that I wouldn’t be who I am without…” I have to say that this is the sweetest, most optimistic thing I’ve been told in a while about our situation. And it really got me thinking.

Maybe he is right. Why not? Important big changes in our lives are really happening right now. The more we look at them in that light, the more things will clarify.

Some more ways to use this “rosy glasses” view to see things:

  • My kids’ summer day camp has been canceled. That left me without a summer job and three of my kids without a day camp plan. With Evan looking for a job, and me working on building my Reiki practice, maybe the opportunities here are for family time and more time to devote to the growth of my Reiki practice. These are opportunities we wouldn’t have had if I was teaching and my kids were in camp 5 days a week for the summer.

  • Evan is looking for a job. (Did I mention this? ha). Maybe this is the kick in the butt I need to devote some time to making the most of building my Reiki practice – right when it’s needed. Sometimes we get most motivated when there’s a need over a goal, dream or desire. Needs are urgent motivators for sure. Luckily, I have some wonderful people helping me with this, Helena Jackson and Fred Krazeise, both very dear friends who are giving me practical advice I need to improve my website and see the potential in Reiki Awakening and myself as a professional Reiki healer and teacher.

I have told my students in the past that life is many things. The way you choose to view life determines how you feel about it. I gave them all little kaleidoscopes one day to illustrate this point. Looking in the kaleidoscope makes the world look different from usual. Compare this to taking a new approach to seeing a problem. You can look at the world and feel terrible. The world can be horrible. People mistreat each other in really tragic ways. Money is tight, bills are high, the housing market stinks…blahblahblah. And yet, the world can be beautiful. People help each other, we have the power to heal ourselves and others, we can choose to visualize beauty and success and feel it. We can find new opportunities to be our best in the midst of everything. We can make a conscious choice to be good, loving people, for this moment, for the day, for tomorrow too.

I am meditating each day on the Reiki Precepts. They are:

Just for today:
I will not be angry.
I will not worry.
I will be grateful.
I will do my work honestly.
I will treat everyone with kindness.

These five little goals are the seeds of an amazing outlook on life. Each one has in it the potential to improve oneself and life for those around one in truly inspirational ways. It takes work. I have trouble sometimes with the whole day, so I make it “just for this moment” for those that I find more challenging. But I believe that the more I commit myself to these ideas, each moment, each day, the more I will see the good in my situation and the opportunities that are here.

Thank you David, for inspiring me to see this way.

Religion, Spirituality and Reiki

This week, I’ve been thinking about the ideas of faith, belief and spirituality. These thoughts usually come up for me when I’m at services. Rarely do formal worship services resonate with me, although I sometimes have to go and participate with the family. Friday night was one of those times. As I do when I’m at a service in the congregation, I found myself pondering religious ritual, formal worship, and means of making the connection to a Higher Source.

I’m Jewish. I should probably mention that I’m comfortable being Jewish. More than a religious practice, Judaism is a culture. This means it involves family, history, food, music, art, books, holidays, language, Bible, religious writings, education, and ties to a land (Israel). It’s essentially a way of life. I also have a Master’s Degree in Jewish Studies, and have worked as a Jewish educator either part time or full time for the last 13 years. Despite my education and teaching experience, the formal worship aspect has never made me feel spiritually connected.

Judaism is founded on monotheism, and many of our prayers are of the “God is One” variety, which works for me. But as I sat in services on Friday night, I realized an aspect of what’s wrong with it for me. What’s not working for me is that in the prayers, God is addressed as You. You this, You that, thank You, You are this, You are that… separate from “us.”

This feels wrong to me because the way I’ve come to feel about spirituality is that WE are God – we all are, via our souls, essences, life force – and we are connected to each other through this same energy. Our energy – our soul essence -connects all life, and that is Spirit energy. We are all capable of learning to give more of this essence energy (Life Force Energy, Ki, Chi, whatever you might call it) to each other as needed, for healing, balance, etc. in whatever way we learn how (Reiki, Quantum Touch, and many other energy healing modalities), and there are many ways.

But it doesn’t matter how we do this – just that we do. I think it could be one of the main reasons for existence, to feel this connectedness, elevate our vibrations, learn to help each other and the world (for all nature is connected by this energy – plants, animals, the Earth). Once you know how to do this, you see the world and life itself so differently. I don’t need formal worship to feel connected because I feel connected through energy work.

The people who devalue life, who hate others and think they are better than others, who let the
ego interfere with the basic principle of connectedness are missing this essential point. That’s why it usually seems that organized religion separates people into little groups of people who miss the point. Once a religion asserts that it is the “True” path to spirituality, it is missing the point of the connectedness, the Oneness of everyone and everything.

So why am I writing this? I often think about the ideas of faith, belief and spirituality. I don’t reject religion in general or my religion. In fact, I feel connected to the belonging-ness and the aspects of Judaism that stress the importance of helping, caring for the planet, respecting others, and being a good person. Holiday themes of family and togetherness, the importance of everyone, and seeking a connection with God are parts that I especially like.

Reiki is not a religion. It is a spiritual practice however. That is its essence because it involves connecting with this spiritual energy. It is not a religion because it requires no beliefs, does not single out one group over another, and it does not require a formalized ritual of worship. There are no Reiki holidays. There is not Reiki food. No language needs to be learned. Symbols are optional but have no religious significance. There are precepts, ideas of how Reiki can benefit your life, but it’s not considered Law or required faith, or something to accept or suffer any consequences if you don’t.

So this week’s blog entry is intended to share my thoughts on religion, spirituality, faith and Reiki with you. Please comment if you feel moved to do so.

Thank you. Peace.
